Ketamine Therapy vs. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy: What’s the Difference?

The terms “ketamine therapy” and “Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy” are often used as though they mean the same thing. They can overlap, but they describe different models of care—and that difference matters when choosing treatment.

What is ketamine therapy?

Ketamine therapy is a broad term for medically supervised treatment involving ketamine. Depending on the provider and setting, the primary focus may be the medication itself. A medical clinician evaluates whether ketamine is appropriate, determines the treatment approach, and manages medical safety and follow-up.

Some ketamine programs include little or no psychotherapy. Others may recommend that clients work with a therapist separately. The phrase “ketamine therapy” alone does not tell you how much psychological preparation or integration is included.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, or KAP, intentionally combines ketamine treatment with psychotherapy. The medication remains medically managed, while the psychotherapy component creates a structured process for preparation, therapeutic support when appropriate, and integration.

In other words, KAP is not simply ketamine plus a conversation afterward. Psychotherapy is part of the treatment framework.

Ketamine therapy vs. KAP: the key difference

The clearest distinction is the role psychotherapy plays. In a medication-centered ketamine model, the clinical intervention may primarily be the ketamine treatment itself. In KAP, psychotherapy is deliberately woven around the ketamine experience so that psychological goals, patterns, emotions, relationships, and behavior can be explored over time.

Neither label automatically tells you whether a particular provider is a good fit. What matters is understanding exactly what services are included and who is responsible for each part of care.

What does psychotherapy add to the process?

Ketamine experiences can feel meaningful, unusual, emotionally intense, quiet, confusing, or difficult to put into words. Psychotherapy provides a place to work with that material without assuming every experience contains a hidden message or requires a particular interpretation.

Preparation can help clarify goals, expectations, fears, coping resources, and practical plans. Integration can help connect what emerged to daily life—such as boundaries, relationships, beliefs, habits, values, grief, trauma-related patterns, or decisions. The aim is to support durable therapeutic work rather than treating the ketamine experience as an isolated event.

Who handles the ketamine in KAP?

Ketamine is a prescription medication, so medical eligibility, prescribing, medication management, and medical safety belong with an appropriately licensed medical provider. A psychotherapist does not take over those medical responsibilities simply because psychotherapy is incorporated into treatment.

At Guided Prana, KAP is provided in collaboration with Journey Clinical. Journey Clinical's licensed medical team handles ketamine eligibility, prescribing, and medical management for eligible clients. Guided Prana provides the psychotherapy component, including preparation, psychotherapy support, and integration.

Is integration therapy the same as KAP?

Not necessarily. Integration therapy can occur after a ketamine experience even when the therapist was not part of the medication treatment itself. KAP generally refers to a more intentionally coordinated model in which psychotherapy is incorporated around ketamine treatment. Ask providers how they define their services rather than relying on the label alone.

Questions to ask when comparing providers

If you are comparing ketamine clinics or KAP therapists, ask who performs the medical evaluation, who prescribes and monitors ketamine, whether a licensed psychotherapist is involved, what preparation includes, whether psychotherapy is available around dosing, how integration works, and how the medical and psychotherapy providers coordinate care.

Those questions can reveal much more than whether a website uses the words “ketamine therapy” or “KAP.”

What does KAP look like at Guided Prana?

Guided Prana provides virtual psychotherapy for adults located in Texas. For eligible KAP clients, psychotherapy is coordinated with Journey Clinical's medical team. Treatment may include preparation, psychotherapy support associated with ketamine sessions when clinically appropriate, integration, and ongoing therapy focused on translating insight into meaningful change.

Aetna and Curative are accepted for eligible psychotherapy services through Journey Clinical. Coverage, eligibility, and client responsibility vary by plan and should be verified before treatment. Medical evaluation, prescribing, medication, and medical-management costs are separate from Guided Prana psychotherapy fees.

Which approach is right for you?

The answer depends on what you are seeking. Someone primarily interested in a medically administered ketamine intervention may prioritize a medical ketamine clinic. Someone who wants psychotherapy intentionally integrated with the experience may prefer a KAP model. Medical appropriateness must still be determined independently by a qualified medical provider.
