KETAMINE-ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY

What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine with psychotherapy, preparation, and integration to support deeper exploration and meaningful change.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Is More Than Ketamine

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, commonly called KAP, is an approach that incorporates ketamine into a broader psychotherapeutic process. Rather than viewing the medication as the entire treatment, KAP uses preparation, the ketamine experience, and integration as interconnected parts of therapy.

Ketamine may temporarily alter ordinary patterns of perception, attention, and emotional processing. Within an intentional therapeutic setting, that shift can create an opportunity to approach thoughts, emotions, memories, and habitual patterns from a different perspective.

What Does the KAP Process Look Like?

Although treatment is individualized, KAP generally includes three important components: preparation, ketamine-assisted sessions, and integration.

1. Preparation

Preparation happens before a ketamine session. We discuss what is bringing you to KAP, your goals and intentions, expectations, concerns, and the practical details that can help create a supportive environment for the experience.

Preparation is not about deciding exactly what should happen during the ketamine experience. Instead, it helps establish a foundation that allows you to approach the experience with greater curiosity, openness, and psychological safety.

2. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Sessions

During a ketamine-assisted session, the therapeutic environment is intentionally designed to allow space for your internal experience. Depending on your treatment plan and what arises during the session, psychotherapy may involve periods of conversation as well as quieter periods of inward attention.

At Guided Prana, eligible clients access ketamine treatment in partnership with Journey Clinical. Journey Clinical's medical team determines medical eligibility, prescribes ketamine when appropriate, and manages the medical aspects of treatment. Guided Prana provides the psychotherapy component of KAP.

3. Integration

The experience itself is only part of the process. Integration provides space to explore what emerged and consider how insights from the experience relate to your everyday life.

Sometimes an experience produces an immediate insight. Other times, its meaning develops gradually. Integration can involve exploring emotions, patterns, relationships, behaviors, values, or changes you would like to carry forward.

Why Combine Ketamine With Psychotherapy?

People often come to therapy knowing intellectually what they want to change while still feeling caught in familiar emotional or behavioral patterns. KAP offers a different context in which those patterns may be explored.

Psychotherapy helps provide structure around that exploration. Instead of treating the ketamine experience as an isolated event, therapy can help connect what happens during a session with the client's broader history, relationships, goals, and ongoing process of change.

What Can People Explore Through KAP?

People pursue KAP for many different reasons. Depending on the individual and their treatment needs, therapy may involve exploring anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, chronic stress, burnout, life transitions, emotional patterns, relationships, identity, or a desire for greater self-understanding and personal growth.

KAP is not appropriate for everyone, and ketamine is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric care. Medical eligibility should always be evaluated by a qualified medical provider.

A Whole-Person Approach

Mental health does not exist separately from the rest of the person. Our emotional lives interact with the nervous system, physical health, sleep, stress, relationships, environment, lifestyle, and the ways we make meaning from our experiences.

My approach to KAP reflects that larger picture. The goal is not simply to have an unusual or powerful experience. The therapeutic work is in understanding what emerges and finding meaningful ways to bring that awareness back into everyday life.
